Welcome to “Above & Beyond”, the City of Seattle blog with inspirational stories about amazing public service.  I’m Dave Stewart, Personnel Director.

Chances are, if you’ve ever met Jenny, she’ll remember you AND warmly greet you by name each time she sees you!  She often makes deliveries to the Mayor’s Office in downtown Seattle – always dressed in a blazer, skirt, and carrying her briefcase.

Sergeant Patricia HayesSergeant Patricia Hayes supervises the Burglary/Theft and Retail Theft Units in the West Precinct.

She finds it profoundly fulfilling to make changes in neighborhoods for the better.

And Patricia has a compelling story as a Rookie that speaks to just that.

Bruce Blood

Bruce BloodBruce is the City Web Manager, who oversees the Citywide Web Team, Seattle.gov and much of the City’s InWeb.

Bruce has built an amazing website – a website that has not gone unnoticed on a national scale!  On September 1, 2011, the Center for Digital Government awarded Seattle’s web portal, www.seattle.gov , as the top City government web portal for 2011.

Joe Carter

Joe CarterJoe is a Construction Manager at Seattle Public Utilities with a great story.

On OCTOBER 2, 1995, an Inspector called him at 9:15 am with a big problem.  Think!  What was happening in Seattle in OCTOBER 1995BASEBALL!

Ticiang Diangson

Ticiang DiangsonTiciang is all about amazing service to the community, first working as a Social Worker at the Northwest Youth Service Bureau and now as the Director of the Environmental Justice & Service Equity Division.

It’s a great job, because she works hard so all City residents receive equitable services and have access to Seattle Public Utility programs and decision-making.

SL Demps

SL DempsHe goes by Demps–no one knows what SL stands for & he ain’t giving it up!

Demps started working for the City in 1961!  His first job was General Laborer at Lincoln Park cutting blackberries. Back then, he had 3 tools – a sickle to cut them, a pitchfork to pile them up and a stone to sharpen his sickle.

Aleta Brunkel

Aleta BrunkelAleta spent her first 17 years at the City of Seattle as a Counselor at Seattle Veterans’ Action Center (SEA-VAC)

Now, she’s a Counselor/Case Manager for Aging and Disability Services (ADS) for the Human Services Department.

Aleta is a perfect example of the wonderful domino effect of helping people.

Detective “Cookie”

Detective Denise Bouldin, affectionately known as Detective “Cookie”, is assigned to the School Emphasis Team and is a Community Liaison Officer.  

Detective Cookie has created a trusting bond with the youth and adult community members in the Rainier Valley and Central District.

Lt. John Hayes

John Hayes is a Lieutenant in the Seattle Police Department. He is currently working at Headquarters.  There’s never a dull moment for him. His career experiences with the department are as diverse as the people he enjoys working with, in and outside the department. In 2008 he was made the Director over the Community Relations Division until the position was abrogated in October of 2010.

His most recent assignments prior to directorship position included supervising Detectives in the Burglary Theft and Juvenile, Community Police Team Officers, oversees Seattle Team For Youth, and the Youth Outreach Unit (affectionately known as YO SPD).
